Create, Connect and Celebrate: Alumni Explore Traditional Lantern Craftmanship
To celebrate the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival, the Advancement and Alumni Affairs Office organised the “Alumni Mid-Autumn Lantern Craft Workshop” on 12 September. Alumni, family members and friends came together to explore the art of traditional Hong Kong lantern-making and create their own unique star fruit lanterns while discovering the beauty of this treasured intangible cultural heritage.
Held at The Create, The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong’s city centre hub in the West Kowloon Cultural District, the workshop provided a unique setting overlooking Victoria Harbour amid a vibrant arts and cultural landscape. Under the guidance of renowned Hong Kong lantern craftsman Master Au Yeung Ping-chi, participants learned time-honoured techniques using bamboo strips and colourful cellophane paper. As the lanterns gradually took shape, they gained a deeper appreciation of the skill, patience and craftsmanship behind this enduring art form.
The workshop brought together alumni and guests from different generations and cultural backgrounds, creating a vibrant gathering that spanned ages, cultures and communities. Alongside the hands-on session, everyone enjoyed refreshments, took part in the lantern riddle game, and shared festive joy in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
By the end of the workshop, a colourful collection of handmade star fruit lanterns had come to life. Participants proudly took home their creations as cherished keepsakes, carrying with them not only festive blessings but also fond memories of a meaningful cultural experience. More than a celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the workshop fostered intergenerational and cross-cultural connections, demonstrating how traditional craftsmanship can bring people together and deepen appreciation for the richness of Chinese culture.
