APPRECIATION AND NAMING CEREMONY OF LEE YICK HOI LUN MOSAIC COLLEGE, S H HO WELLNESS COLLEGE, AND FUNG YIU KING EVERGREEN COLLEGE, HSUHK JOCKEY CLUB RESIDENTIAL COLLEGES

Thanks to the generous donation of HK$50 million respectively from Wei Lun Foundation, The S. H. Ho Foundation and Fung Yiu King Charitable Foundation in support of the University’s strategic initiatives and development, The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) has named its three Colleges under its Jockey Club Residential Colleges (RCs) system as Lee Yick Hoi Lun Mosaic College, S H Ho Wellness College and Fung Yiu King Evergreen College (listed in the order of establishment time). Together with the Patrick S C Poon Amity College which was similarly funded and named, all the four Colleges have established their respective development endowment fund, symbolising a new chapter of HSUHK’s RCs system.

A joint appreciation and naming ceremony was held on 3 November 2022 to express the University’s deepest gratitude to the three donors. Officiated by Ms Diana Cesar, HSUHK Chairman of Board of Governors; Dr Moses Cheng, HSUHK Council Chairman, and Professor Simon Ho, HSUHK President, the ceremony was witnessed by over 140 guests and friends of HSUHK and marked a new chapter of the University’s unique RCs system.

In addressing the audience, Ms Diana Cesar, Chairman of the Board of Governors, said, “I am very excited to witness new milestones of Lee Yick Hoi Lun Mosaic College, S H Ho Wellness College, Fung Yiu King Evergreen College and Patrick S C Poon Amity College. We hope that HSUHK’s RCs system will become the cradle of future leaders. I would like to take this opportunity to call upon members and friends of the University community to support HSUHK in its continued pursuit of academic excellence. In the years ahead, we will witness a rich harvest from our joint endeavours.”

President Simon Ho remarked: “We are truly grateful for the support of Wei Lun Foundation, The S H Ho Foundation and Fung Yiu King Charitable Foundation. Together with the Patrick S C Poon Amity College which was named earlier after its Patron Dr Patrick Poon, our RCs system is now opening a new chapter. Under the leadership of the newly formed Board of each college and with more resources in place for the holistic development of our residents, we have confidence that we can combine ‘Learning’ with ‘Living’ effectively at HSUHK. We are deeply indebted to all the donors for their care and contribution, and are thankful for The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust which had rendered its support to the University to kick-start such a meaningful initiative six years ago.”

In his sharing, Dr Moses Cheng, Council Chairman of HSUHK, said that the RCs system connects different stakeholders in the University and develops students’ sense of belonging. Through various activities such as Council Chairman Bowl, it strengthens interactions among members from different colleges and promotes sportsmanship and team spirit.  “I have attended many inter-college games where all the players made their best efforts for their colleges.  I am impressed by the bonding among different members in the colleges and their friendship and sportsmanship,” said Dr Cheng.

HSUHK is the first among local higher education institutions to adopt a full-and-small-scale residential colleges system.  The HSUHK Jockey Club Residential Colleges complex was completed in September 2015 with the generous donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. The RCs system aims to provide an integrated living and learning community for students to learn and make self-improvement, to develop interpersonal networks, and to nurture a sense of commitment and self-discipline. The four Colleges offer accommodations for about 1,200 undergraduate students.

Lee Yick Hoi Lun Mosaic College focuses on cultural diversity and is designed to groom students as capable leaders with global perspectives. S H Ho Wellness College promotes a healthy lifestyle by organising various physical and spiritual care and cultural activities to raise students’ awareness of body and mind wellness. Patrick S C Poon Amity College is dedicated to fostering students’ community engagement by offering a wide range of community service opportunities, while Fung Yiu King Evergreen College is positioned to be a sustainable community where its students can attain knowledge of sustainable living and dynamic relationships with nature.
