NAMING CEREMONY OF WEI LUN SQUARE

The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) was deeply honoured to have received a generous donation of HK$20 million from Wei Lun Foundation in support of the University’s strategic development and student exchange programme. The Naming Ceremony of “Wei Lun Square” was held on 1 Nov 2018 to express the deepest appreciation of the Foundation’s unfailing support.

Witnessed by over 100 honourable guests, students, alumni and staff members, the ceremony was officiated by Mrs Helen Lee, spouse of the late Dr Lee Quo Wei and Chairman of Wei Lun Foundation; Mr Thomas Liang, Chief Executive of Wei Lun Foundation; Dr Moses Cheng, Council Chairman; Dr Patrick Poon, Chairman of the Foundation Management Committee and Fundraising and Donation Committee; and President Simon S M Ho; as well as other representatives of the Lee family.

Dr and Mrs Lee Quo Wei, Founders of Wei Lun Foundation, had a very close affiliation with the University. In the early 1970s, Dr S H Ho decided to establish a tertiary institution to nurture banking and financial talents. Dr Lee applied to acquire premium-exempt land from the government for the construction of the former Hang Seng School of Commerce (HSSC) and was joined by Mrs Lee for site inspection on many occasions. Over the following 15 years, Dr Lee served HSSC successively as its Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors, Chairman of the Management Committee, and Supervisor, laying the foundation for the University’s far-reaching achievements.

In his remarks, Dr Cheng expressed his sincere gratitude to the Lee family and Wei Lun Foundation for their staunch support over the past years. In 2015, Lee Quo Wei Academic Building was named in honour of Dr Lee in recognition of his long-standing contributions and Wei Lun Foundation’s bountiful sponsorship of campus expansion and the provision of well-rounded quality education for students. Dr Cheng thanked Mrs Lee once again for Wei Lun Foundation’s donation which gives encouragement to the staff and the students, as well as serving as a driving force for the University’s future development.

In his speech, President Simon Ho pointed out that HSUHK has always been aspiring to become a leading liberal-arts-oriented private university in the region. Early this year, the University launched its Strategic Plan 2018-2023 with the theme “Riding on the New Era: Private University with a Difference”. Under the Strategic Plan, the University reviewed its vision, missions, core values, positioning and accomplishments, and developed specific goals and action plans in five strategic focus areas. New initiatives featured in the Strategic Plan include: establishment of an art and design academic unit, enhancement of the study and application of creative technology, launch of the “One Student, One Internship” scheme, establishment of HSUHK as a smart university, etc. With Wei Lun Foundation’s timely contributions and under the government’s Seventh Matching Grant Scheme, the University is able to gain greater benefits for its development and its students. President Ho was very thankful to Wei Lun Foundation and the Lee family for their patronage and guidance over the decades. He called for greater support from the wider community and emphasised that all staff members and students would continue to spare no efforts to make the best use of available resources to further contribute to the higher education in Hong Kong.
