President’s Chatroom Series – From Success to Purpose: How to Seize Employment or Start-up Opportunities, and Integrating with Social Missions?
The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) held the “President’s Chatroom Series – From Success to Purpose: How to Seize Employment or Start-up Opportunities, and Integrating with Social Missions” on 20 July 2026. Hosted by Professor Simon S. M. Ho, President of HSUHK, and featured Mr Shih Wing-ching, Founder of the Shih Wing Ching Foundation, and Dr Jessie Cheung Sze-ting, Assistant Professor of the Department of Management. The Chatroom attracted over 2,500 students, alumni, staff and general public through both on-site and online participation.
Amid the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and evolving socio-economic landscape, the speakers shared insights on redefining “success” and pursuing purpose. Mr Shih Wing Ching reflected on his journey from an entry-level employee to a successful entrepreneur. He encouraged young people not to become overly fixated on securing their ideal positions, but rather to seize opportunities to enter the workforce and build their competitive edge through proactive learning, a willingness to take on responsibilities, and perseverance in trying new things. He remarked that the essence of entrepreneurship lies in taking ownership of one’s future and encouraged young people to cultivate independent thinking and a keen awareness of societal developments. Speaking on life purpose and social responsibility, Mr Shih shared his philosophy of profit-sharing and philanthropic engagement, noting that true value lies not in personal achievements or material wealth alone, but in improving the lives of others and contributing to social progress.
Dr Jessie Cheung drew upon her extensive experience in the financial sector and the social impact arena to highlight that entrepreneurial spirit is not confined to business founders. Even within large organisations, individuals can create value through innovative thinking, initiative, and a proactive mindset. She encouraged young people to embrace challenges, remain open to new experiences, and actively serve society through different platforms and channels, thereby discovering their personal mission and future direction.
In response, President Ho highlighted that HSUHK’s “Liberal + Professional” education model aims to cultivate critical thinking and sound value judgment alongside professional knowledge, equipping students to navigate complexity and uncertainty with confidence.
In his concluding remarks, Professor Ho encouraged young people to establish their own definitions of success. While striving for excellence and pursuing personal aspirations, they should also remain attentive to the needs of society and others. Through continuous learning, practice, and reflection, they can create greater social value and lead meaningful lives. Participants attending both in person and online remarked that the discussion was highly inspiring, offering valuable insights into the relationship between success and purpose, while providing greater clarity and guidance for their future academic, career, and life decisions.
